The Coalition of Civil Society in the Gambia on Monday held a meeting on budget transparency and constitutional safeguards through the support of the International Republican Institute.

The meeting was meant to put forward recommendations to the Constitutional Review Commission on the various principles of the draft constitution as well as safeguarding fiscal transparency.

The International Republican Institute is an American organisation that championed democracy and freedom worldwide.

The meeting brought together members of Civil Society in the country and media practitioners who shared their views and recommendations that they wanted to be submitted to the Constitutional Review Commission.

The Constitutional Review Commission has announced that it will be ending its public consultation on 24 July 2019.

Meanwhile, Bakary Sanyang, facilitator of Monday’s meeting took participants through basic understanding about constitutional safeguards and fiscal transparency.

And participants debated key issues, including citizenship, term limit, secularism, separation of power, inclusion of marginalised groups, voting system, IEC independence, fiscal responsibility.

The participants unanimously agreed on the ones that would be submitted to the Constitutional Review Commission.
