The National Assembly Member for Banjul North, Modou Lamin B. Bah, has called on the government to provide immediate assistance to families affected by Wednesday’s flash floods, as residents begin counting the cost of one of the latest weather-related disasters to hit the capital.

Reacting to the floods in the city, the lawmaker expressed solidarity with victims whose homes and belongings were damaged after heavy rains inundated parts of Banjul.

“To my fellow citizens in Banjul North, and by extension the entire City of Banjul affected by the devastating flash flood that happened yesterday, I extend my deepest solidarity and support,” Bah said.

He said his thoughts were with families who had lost property during the floods and urged the government to move swiftly to provide relief to those affected.

“I urge the government to provide immediate assistance to those affected. Let’s work together to help our communities recover and rebuild. We will get through this together,” he added.

The flash floods followed heavy rainfall that submerged several streets across the capital, disrupting movement and affecting homes and businesses in low-lying areas.

Banjul remains one of the country’s most flood-prone urban centres due to its low elevation and drainage challenges, with heavy downpours frequently leaving communities vulnerable during the rainy season.

While residents assess the extent of the damage, attention is now turning to emergency relief and longer-term measures to strengthen the city’s resilience against recurring floods.
