The Dutch sponsored health centre in Lamin Village

As access to health delivery in the Gambia doesn’t only remain a problem but access to a quality and affordable medication also remains challenge, Holland Foundation in its ‘Children of Lamin’ project has constructed a community base health centre for Lamin Village.

Lamin is urban village in the West Coast Region of the Gambia that is home to more than 10,000 people, and seeking medication for the villagers have been put at ease.

Last year the health centre has registered about 30,000 patients in and out of the community with some coming as far as Basse.

The health centre is a self-sponsored community base hospital that doesn’t receive any amount of subvention from the Gambia government since its inception and it has a total staff of 42 people.

Speaking to Gambiana in an exclusive interview on Thursday, director of the Foundation said her foundation has been supporting Lamin in various areas ranging from health and education.

Annemieke de Koning said: “the hospital received 30, 000 patients last year and not only the people from Lamin but from other communities.”

Meanwhile, the sponsored healthcare centre by Holland Foundation also has its sub branches in Ebo Town and Sinchu both in the outskirt of Banjul.

She said her Foundation is developing with lots of plans to support vulnerable Gambians especially those in the community of Lamin. She also unveiled plan to train Gambian doctors by her Foundation.

While describing the health centre as ‘high standard hospital’, she however said the only area missing at the moment at the health centre is a theater for surgery.
