Gambia’s Olympic medal hopeful Gina Bass has qualified for 100m semifinal on Saturday despite finishing fourth.

Bass, 26, sets a new national record with an impressive time of 11.12 seconds in the preliminary round heat 2 at the Olympic Stadium on Friday.

The race was won by the current world fastest female sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica.

The 34-year-old Jamaican clocked a stunning 10.84 seconds to win the heat, while Ajla Del Ponte of Switzerland finished second with a national record of 10.91 seconds.

Correction: An earlier version of this story erroneously stated that Gina Bass was eliminated after finishing fourth. But she made it to the semifinals on the strength of her 11.12 seconds timing.

Gambiana regrets the error.
