The Peoples Progressive Party’s congress has descended into a fist fight following row among the delegates.

Witnesses told Gambiana that personnel of the Police Intervention Unit had to be called to restore order at the congress being held at Brikama-Ba, Central River Region.

The congress will elect the party’s new leader after the resignation of Papa Njie following his appointment as Gambia High Commissioner to Nigeria.

Papa Njie’s election also descended into a bitter row leading to the splitting of the party with BB Darboe and other old grandees forming a new party.

MP for Banjul South Fatoumatta Touma Njai is vying for the leadership post against Kebba Jallow, former mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council and interim party leader.

“They want to put labaj (fraud) in the politics of the party. We have seen the time of Papa Njie which resulted in the party going to court,” Kebba Bah, PPP’s regional chairman for CRR North told The Fatu Network.

“On this occasion, the party is facing that same fate. Because Demba said it is OJ who told him that delegates who support Touma Njai should be removed from the list.”
