The World Health Organisation Gambia chief has warned The Gambia of complacency against coronavirus saying a new wave could emerged as Covid cases continue to rise in other countries.

Dr. Desta A. Tiruneh was speaking at a donation ceremony of D50 million worth of  health equipment to the Ministry of Health through a support from the South Korean government.

“Number of cases is still increasing in some countries and we should be well prepared to any new rise of cases and Africa is not different,” Dr Tiruneh told the gathering.

He reiterated how fast the new Covid variant could transmit among people, adding “in this regard, we need assistance from different partners and this is part of the WHO support.”

Dr Tinureh said the equipment will help the nation’s health sector in its fight against diseases in the country, describing ventilators as critical in the management of severe cases of coronavirus.

Dr Ahmed Lamin Samateh, Minister of Health, said when it comes to Covid-19 “there is no room to be complacent in dealing with the seriousness it deserves.

“Certainly, the Government of The Gambia deems it serious and together with partners is not relenting on the efforts to deal with Covid-19. We needed testing kits and other accessories needed for testing.”

The Gambia has recorded nearly 200 coronavirus deaths with over 5,000 cases since the emergence of the virus in 2020.
