About 14 prisoners escaped from Jeshwang prison on New Year’s Day while prison officers were having dinner.

This is the third time prisoners have escaped from the recently refurbished prison.

“This happened on the 1st of January 2021 from the hours of 6 to 7:30. Normally that’s the time officers bring in their dinners,” Senior Prison Officer Luck Jatta told The Fatu Network.

“We were made to understand that it was a plan by the inmates themselves so it’s more attached to negligence of officers because there was no prison break but there was an escape.

“They are not convicted but remand inmates so it’s going to be very difficult to get a hold of them if only you know them and this is the third time this is happening.”

Meanwhile another remand prisoner Buba Drammeh escaped from Mile Two prison last week.

The fugitive was in remand for the alleged murder of Buba Jammeh, a former staff of Brikama Area Council (BAC), during communal land dispute in Gunjur last year.

Two officers at Mile Two Central Prison have been detained in connection with the escape of Buba Drammeh.
