Momodou Sabally, a firebrand opposition figure, has been released without conditions after days of protest against his detention.
Sabally, who is campaign manager for the leading opposition United Democratic Party, was detained last week over a viral video suggesting that president Adama Barrow would be overthrown before the next year’s local elections.
The viral video was leaked the same week the government announced that it had foiled a coup attempt by some elements of The Gambia Armed Forces.
However, there is no indication that the two events are linked.
The United Democratic Party and human rights activists have earlier called for Sabally’s release.
Yesterday, Sabally’s lawyer, Abdoulie Fatty, claimed that police have denied him access to his client.
Fatty took to Twitter to express his frustration with the authorities about denying him access to Sabally.
He said: “I’ve been at the PIU entrance for 45mins. I explained I came to see my client to brief him about the ongoing court process.
“PIU insist I must get clearance from Banjul. Bjl’s passing the buck to the PIU. Essentially, I’m deprived from consulting with my client. I’m denied access.”
