Gambian midfielder Ebou Adams has apologised to the country for picking a straight red card during Gambia’s 3-0 defeat to Senegal in their Africa Cup of Nations opening match on Monday.
The 28-year-old was dismissed for an off-the ball challenge just before half-time while the Scorpions were two goals down to the defending champions.
Adams said he is devastated for picking a red card during the match, adding that the unfortunate situation was not intentional. He linked the woeful defeat of the Scorpions to his red card.
He took to Twitter now X to apologise: “I am devastated of being sent off in our match against Senegal! I never intended to receive a red card whilst representing my beloved country of the Gambia, but was unfortunate enough to receive one, which had negatively impacted our game, the points gained and our nation’s chances of success in the group stage.
“As a result, I want to sincerely apologise to my coach, teammates, Scorpions fans and the entire country of the Gambia and Gambians abroad for not being able to finish the game for my beloved country and fans. From the bottom of my heart, I am sorry.”
