The Gambia’s Ministry of Health has issued a public statement urging citizens to stay hydrated and wear masks and eye protection in response to increasing air pollution.

Recent reports indicate that air pollution levels are on the rise, particularly in urban areas, and have reached alarming levels.

Prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to serious health issues, including respiratory problems, allergies, and heart conditions.

In the statement, the Ministry said: “To protect yourself and your family, we urge people to limit outdoor exposure, especially those with underlying health conditions.

“Wearing masks and protective glasses when outdoors is essential to safeguard against harmful airborne particles.”

The Ministry also emphasised the importance of staying hydrated, advising people to “drink plenty of water to help the body cope with the adverse effects of poor air quality”.

“Additionally, keeping doors and windows closed can help prevent outdoor pollution from entering homes.

“Taking these simple precautions can significantly reduce the harmful effects of poor air quality,” the statement added.
