Abdoulie Fatty, a renown Gambian human rights lawyer, has said that former president Yahya Jammeh cannot evade justice for crimes allegedly committed during his 22 year rule.

The senior human rights lawyer’s comments come just a week after Jammeh vowed to return to the country, dismissing plans to prosecute him as “nonsense”.

However, his remarks have been widely condemned by Gambians, who have called for accelerating efforts to establish the ECOWAS hybrid court to bring Jammeh and his accomplices to justice for crimes against humanity.

“As someone familiar with the discourse regarding the setting-up of the Hybrid Court for the ultimate criminal prosecution of Jammeh and his cohort, I can categorically say that he is acutely aware he cannot evade justice if he ever comes to Gambia, [the] government cannot shield him in any way,” Lawyer Fatty said on X, formerly known as Twitter.
