President Adama Barrow

The Gambian President Adama Barrow has said he won’t suffer the same fate as his predecessor who has been sent to exile after leaving power.

He vowed to exercise his presidential duties in lines with the laws of the country.

Mr Barrow’s leadership recently came under criticism among some Gambians, who are concerned he may be trying to tighten his grip on power like Yahya Jammeh, who ruled the country with an iron fist.

Speaking to QTV, Barrow acknowledged he might have made minor mistakes but expressed confidence that he would remain in the country after his tenure in office.

“I have no fear [I will go to exile] I will live in this country after leaving power. In this office, you can make a mistake but I will not make a deliberate mistake,” he said.

Unlike his assumption to power back in 2017, which was marked with tense chaos after Jammeh refused to step down, citing election irregularities despite initially conceding defeat –  Barrow promised to hand over power peacefully to his successor. He aims to be the first Gambian head of state to leave and remain in the country.

“I want to live in this country and I want to leave a good legacy in this country. And when I leave power, I want to hand over power peacefully,” he added.
