Speaker National Assembly of Gambia

The Gambia’s speaker of parliament, Fabakary Tombong Jatta, has criticised some lawmakers for being absent at the start of the parliamentary session, warning such behaviour will not be tolerated.

Mr Jatta’s remarks followed a threat to adjourn the house Tuesday sitting to Wednesday as there was no quorum of the members.

After the warning, a fellow lawmaker volunteered and stepped out to call in other MPs who were outside the chamber. A video shows them rushing to their seats.

In his address, Mr Jatta  expressed disappointment, describing it unacceptable for elected lawmakers to deliberately step out of chambers when a session is due to start.

“Honourable members, it’s very disappointing that some of you are coming this time when we have agreed on time. There was nothing that some of you were doing. There is no excuse. We have agreed on time and you should be here on time, but people will sit outside doing nothing,” he said in a disappointing tone.
