The Edward Francis Small Centre for Rights and Justice (EFSCRJ) has called on the police to investigate the fatal military vehicle accident that led to the death of Sainabou Gaye in Busumbala.

“As a matter of human rights and the rule of law, we call on the Inspector General of the Gambia Police Force to open a criminal investigation into this matter, as it involved the death of an individual,” the centre said in a statement.

According to the centre, the police are obliged to investigate incidents involving arson, death, injury, and sexual violence.

“Thus, the police should open a criminal investigation to get to the bottom of this and ensure justice and accountability,” it added.

“Even though the incident involved the military, it happened within the community and led to the death of a civilian. For that reason, it falls within the legitimate mandate of the police.”
