A disturbing video has surfaced showing a mob assaulting a man accused of stealing in Sanyang village.
The incident has sparked debate over mob justice, with human rights advocates condemning the act as cruel and unjust.
In the video, the suspect is stripped of his clothes, left only in his underwear, tied to a concrete pole, and doused with water while the mob beats him with lashes and punches. Under immense pressure, he can be heard confessing to the theft, explaining that he resorted to stealing to take care of his mother.
“I went to steal because I want to take care of my mother,” he confessed in the video.
However, Modou Alieu Njai described the mob’s actions as “really sad”, adding that “no one should justify mob justice or stealing.”
“This is not what democracy is all about. We will continue to suffer as a nation because we are wicked and lack empathy. Hand him over to the police, let him be charged and taken to court.
“I don’t want to be part of a society that enjoys the suffering of others just because they’ve been wronged. Real victims don’t terrorize others. This is barbarism, and if we’re not careful, the change we seek will not come because we are evil in nature. Please take this down—it is a violation of his rights,” he added.
Karu Sallah warned that people are not well nowadays, adding, “If he had died in their hands, they would have brought serious problems upon themselves.”
“Regardless of the police’s attitude toward thieves, they should have taken him to the police,” he said.
Lamin Bojang also warned the youth not to take the law into their own hands, saying, “If this guy dies, it becomes a completely different story.”
ML Sanneh urged people to always report crimes to the police.
“Demand justice through legal means. Together, we can build a safer, fairer society for everyone. Say no to mob justice. Trust the process. Trust the law.”
