Almameh Gibba, the National Assembly Member for Foni Kansala, has condemned the sale of former president Yahya Jammeh’s assets under the Barrow government, describing the proceedings as an act of “corruption” carried out by greedy individuals.

Gibba, a staunch defender of Jammeh’s legacy, was responding to a recent exposé by The Republic, which alleges that the Gambian government recovered only $23 million out of an estimated $362 million assets of the former president.

The lawmaker accused the Barrow government of complicity, alleging that the country’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dawda A. Jallow, has been avoiding his inquiries throughout parliamentary proceedings.

“We’ve seen that what they did was illegal, unjustified, and riddled with corruption. Some of them are power-hungry, others are chasing wealth, and some are only interested in what they can take home. Even if some so-called elites claim Jammeh didn’t acquire his wealth legally, did they follow the proper procedures? No. It was a ‘terri kafo’ that they invented,” he said.

He also described some of Jammeh’s critics before 2017 as being extremely poor, claiming they couldn’t even afford proper footwear.

“Some of them didn’t even have shoes to wear, but today they are elites living in mansions. Before 2016, go to their houses and look at their fences, but today, things have completely changed. What made them some of the richest people in the country? Some of the looters were once as poor as church mice. We know who they are,” he added.
