Alhagie Babou Ceesay, the National Assembly member for  Sabach Sanjal, has issued a public apology following backlash over remarks he made referring youth-led protesters as “cockroaches” and “mice.”

The comment, made during a recent parliamentary session, sparked widespread criticism and accusations of disrespect towards young people advocating for change.

In a statement released Wednesday, he expressed regret for his choice of words, saying he did not intend to cause offence.

“My sincere apologies for any misunderstanding or harm caused by my previous submission in parliament, understanding that my words may have been misinterpreted or caused unintended harm,” he said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to the youth of Sabach Sanjal, the Gambia, and future generations.

“Your aspirations and concerns are deeply valued and understood. I believe in your potential to shape a brighter future. My dedication to providing opportunities for growth remains steadfast,” he added.

He described young people as “the leaders of tomorrow” and pledged to support their development.

“I remain your humble MP,” he concluded.
