Nogoi Njie, an activist and politician who fought against the Jammeh dictatorship, has died aged 58 at the Westfield Clinic after years of protracted illness.

Njie was a leading member of the opposition United Democratic Party and campaigned fervently for democracy and the rule of law.

She was among dozens of Gambians mostly from the United Democratic Party who were arrested and tortured for calling for an electoral reform in 2016.

Njie was also a staunch supporter of human rights and justice in the country.
