President Adama Barrow has announced that fuel prices will be reduced from 1 July, promising relief for motorists and businesses as global fuel prices continue to put pressure on the cost of living.

Speaking at the commissioning of the National Emergency Treatment Centre in Farato, the President said his government would lower pump prices despite global market uncertainties.

“I want to make this declaration that by July 1, I will slash down fuel prices in the country,” Barrow announced.

The President said some of his political opponents were hoping fuel prices would continue to rise because they believe worsening economic conditions would improve their electoral prospects.

“There are some who don’t wish good for The Gambia. All they want is to see The Gambia struggling so they can make their way to the presidency,” he said.

Barrow accused some critics of celebrating the country’s recent electricity challenges and wishing for international events to push fuel prices even higher.

“Some people are celebrating the electricity problem facing the country, and they are wishing the fuel price to keep rising,” he said.

He added: “I was talking to someone who told me they are praying Donald Trump to continue bombing so fuel prices can keep rising.”

The President said his administration remained committed to improving the welfare of Gambians regardless of their political affiliation.

“I have no ill intention for this country and its people. This country will continue to be in peace, whether you’re in the opposition or not,” Barrow said.
