President Adama Barrow today (19 April) presented a cheque of D5 million to The Gambia U20 national team at the State House in Banjul.

The team had a successful tournament at the recent U20 AFCON competition in Egypt where they finished runners-up after losing to Senegal in the final.

Barrow commended the team for putting up respectable performances in all the games while expressing admiration for the head coach Abdoulie Bojang whom he recalled as a tactful player in his active years as a footballer.

He encouraged the team to emulate his steadfastness, discipline and foresight.

Touching on the team’s potential, President Barrow urged the GFF officials to see football as a lucrative venture, adding that football promotes unity and development.

He said the Gambia’s youthful population presents the country with a solid human resource base that should be fully utilised.

‘’You made us proud, and as a government, we will do anything possible to support you,’’ Barrow said.

The minister of youths and sports, Bakary Badjie, said the government remains committed to supporting all sporting activities in the country especially football.

The head coach and team captain both expressed gratitude to the President and the government of The Gambia.
