President Adama Barrow has said that three new power-generating machines ordered by his government are already on their way to The Gambia, as he promises to tackle the country’s persistent electricity shortages.

Speaking in Sanyang, Barrow said the government had already completed construction of the facilities where the machines will be installed.

“As I am talking, we have ordered three machines which are on their way coming. We have already constructed where they should be installed,” President Barrow said.

He also said the government had installed 50 solar plants as part of efforts to boost electricity generation.

The announcement comes amid continued concerns over power reliability, with electricity disruptions affecting households and businesses across the country.

But President Barrow says the government’s investments will eventually take The Gambia beyond simply meeting domestic electricity demand.

“There will come a day, The Gambia will have enough electricity power until it be supplying other countries,” he said.

Mr Barrow said the country would eventually reach a point where electricity supply would no longer be the main concern.

“There will come a day, you can only say you don’t have enough money to buy cash power. But it will not be power,” he added.
