The Gambia U-20 team secured their first victory in the WAFU A CAF U-20 qualifiers in Mali after edging hosts Mali 1-0.

Second-half substitute Dembo Danjo proved to be the difference maker, scoring an 83rd-minute winner to hand the Young Scorpions a crucial three points in their Group A campaign.

After being held to a goalless draw by Liberia in their opening match, the victory represents an important response from the Gambian youngsters as they strengthen their hopes of progressing to the next stage of the competition.

Dembo Danjo’s late strike also spoiled the hosts’ hopes of collecting points on home soil, giving The Gambia a valuable boost ahead of their remaining group fixtures.

In the other Group A encounter, Guinea defeated Liberia 1-0 to claim maximum points and keep the group competitive.
