Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, Minister of Information, has criticised Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, accusing him of turning the Kanifing Municipality into “one of the dirtiest in Africa”.
Dr. Ceesay’s remarks follow Mayor Bensouda’s critique of President Barrow’s government, which he accused of underperformance. Talib had warned that he would retain his seat if he seeks a third term in office, although he has pledged to step down in 2027 after serving two terms.
But Dr. Ceesay believes that Talib should focus on addressing the challenges facing the residents of the municipality rather than “misleading Gambians with false political tricks”.

“Kanifing Municipality is one of the dirtiest municipalities on the continent. In most of the African countries I have visited, I found KM to be the dirtiest, and that’s a fact. Just walk across the street from Senegambia to Turntable, and you’ll see it.
“Go to Bundung, go to Ebo Town, and visit the markets, even their toilets are not fit for human use. I think the young man is focusing too much on politics, which is why he’s going around making false statements and trying to mislead the public. That’s not good politics,” he said in response to Talib’s remarks.
