The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has called on both Mali and Algeria to de-escalate tensions and resolve the matter through dialogue.

This follows a Sunday dispute between the countries after Algeria shot down a Malian drone, which led to each country closing its airspace to the other.

In response to the escalating tension, the regional bloc, the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stated that it has been following the matter with “disquiet”, adding that the “recent developments that have affected relations between the Republic of Mali and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria have been communicated through the various communiques issued by the two countries in recent days.”

“On behalf of the Member States of ECOWAS, the Commission expresses its deep concern about the situation. It appeals to both Mali and Algeria to de-escalate the tension, foster dialogue, and use regional and continental mechanisms to settle differences,” the communique said.
