Sainabou Martin Sonko, the embattled chief executive officer of Kanifing Municipal Council, has called for calm, saying her safety will be ensured by the ministry of local government amid her controversial return to work.

Ms Martin Sonko was under suspension over an alleged million dalasi sandal. A matter still under investigation.

However, she was asked to return to work today (21 Feb.) by the minister of local government as the political rift between the council and the central government widened.

“I urge all to stand down. The minstry of lands and local government will ensure my security. The security measures have been put in place to ensure my safety and legal process are in place to ensure my work,” Ms Sonko told supporters at the council premises.

“The reason for my reaction was the attack they did to my character at the national assembly, and I was left with no option but to react,” she added.

However, mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda described the return of the embattled Mrs Sainabou Martin Sonko as “political interference” by the government.
