Essa Bokar Sey, a former Gambian ambassador to China and USA, has opposed President Adama Barrow’s bid for a third term.
Mr. Sey’s opposition comes just days after President Barrow publicly announced his intention to seek a third term in 2026. Many Gambians have been calling on him to respect term limits.
“I, Ambassador Essa Bokarr Sey, hereby make it categorically clear that I do not support a third-term agenda for the incumbent, nor will I ever support it for any future leader in The Gambia, Inshaa Allah,”he wrote on his Facebook page.
“I urge you not to support a third-term agenda for the incumbent in The Gambia or any future leader who pushes a similar agenda.”
He emphasised the importance of term limits, criticising attempts to extend leadership indefinitely.
“The failure to respect term limits,
Attempts to push for a third term, fourth term, or indefinite-term agendas,
Tampering with constitutions, these are threats to democracy,” he stated.
“Driven by passion and guided by principle, I want to be on record: I do not support a third-term agenda for the incumbent in The Gambia, and I will never support it for any future leader.”
