Former Gambia National Olympic Committee President George Furmose Gomez has died aged 82, a family source said on Wednesday.
Gomez was reported to have passed away in the early hours of Tuesday.
The late sports administrator is a household name in The Gambia for his work in sports and youths development. Fondly called Uncle George, he has been lauded for his philanthropic work in supporting youths particularly those from disadvantaged families.
He was also the president of Camp Africa an NGO that organises annual cultural exchange programme for university students from all over the world.
Gomez was an influential leader in the Catholic Church of The Gambia and was lauded as one of the people behind the present site of the Holy Shrine of Kunkujang Mariama.
