The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the death of Recruit Mamudou Nyabally, the fourth Intake 40 recruit to die following a Combat Fitness Test conducted on 11 September 2026.

Nyabally, from Jareng village in the Central River Region, died on Friday, 18 September, at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH) in Banjul.

He had been the last of the affected recruits to remain in critical condition and under medical observation following the exercise conducted by the GAF Training School.

The incident has prompted an investigation by the Centre for Disease Control to establish the cause of the medical complications experienced by the recruits. The investigation remains ongoing, and the GAF said it would inform the public once the findings are completed.

Nyabally’s funeral and burial are scheduled for Saturday, 19 September, at 2pm in his home village of Jareng, CRR.

Chief of Defence Staff Lieutenant General Ousman Gomez, his deputy, the service chiefs and the entire GAF extended their condolences to the families and loved ones affected by the incident.

The GAF also prayed for the deceased to be granted eternal rest and for their families to be given strength during the difficult period.
