The Gambia government has mourned the deaths of Gambians who died in a tragic boat accident off the coast of Mauritania.
Dozens of Gambians including a pregnant woman died on Wednesday after their wooden boat sank while trying to reach Europe.
Several others are missing and 45 Gambian migrants survived the disaster. The UN migration agency IOM and the Gambia government are working on their repatriation home.
The Gambia government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad described the boat accident as “deep regret and utmost concern”.
“The Government of the Republic of The Gambia extends its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all those affected by this tragic event,” it said.
The Ministry added that The Gambia government “is committed to addressing the root causes of irregular migration and will continue to work closely with partners, including neighbouring countries and relevant local stakeholders to enhance cooperation and implement comprehensive strategies to prevent the reoccurrence of such tragedies.”
