The Gambia is on a high alert after World Health Organisation declared Mpox as Public Health Emergency of Continental Security.

Mpox also known as monkeypox is a viral zoonotic disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans and between humans.

This declaration highlights the critical need for coordinated efforts across the African continent to address and mitigate the impact of the outbreak.

In response to the declaration, Gambia’s ministry of health said in a statement that: “significant efforts are already underway in close collaboration with communities to help reinforce measures to curb mpox by enhancing surveillance, improving preparedness, and strengthening response mechanisms.”

“The Gambia has not recorded any confirmed cases of Mpox to date, but the Ministry of Health remains on high alert and has intensified several measures,” it added.

The ministry urged the public to constantly utilise hand washing with soap and water, and report any unusual symptoms to the nearest health facility and follow the guidance of Ministry of Health.
