The Gambia national team, the Scorpions, are gearing up for a crucial encounter against Madagascar’s Barea as both sides vie for a coveted qualification spot in the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place in Morocco.

The Scorpions are aiming for a third consecutive appearance at the continental championship, having made their debut in 2021 and successfully qualified again in 2023 under former coach Tom Saintfiet, who later stepped down from his position.

Now, under the stewardship of new head coach Jonathan McKinstry, the team’s fortunes seem to hang in the balance.

While some fans laud McKinstry for instilling a more aggressive attacking style that has led to an uptick in scoring, others have expressed concern over his tenure, noting that he has secured only one victory since taking the helm.

As the Scorpions prepare for this pivotal match, the pressure is mounting. A win against Madagascar could significantly bolster their chances of qualifying, while a poor result might heighten scrutiny on McKinstry’s leadership as the team looks to build on their recent successes.
