The Gambia U-17 team encountered a challenging debut in Group C at the 2025 TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, falling to defending champions Senegal with a narrow 1-0 defeat on Tuesday in El Jadida, Morocco.

Right from the start, the young Senegalese lions stamp their authority on the encounter, with captain Ibrahima Sory Sow curling in a stunning free-kick just 10 minutes into the match, easily bypassing a poorly constructed wall. The goal set the tone for the Senegambia derby.

Throughout the first half, Senegal’s dominance was tangible as they controlled the game’s rhythm, leaving the Baby Scorpions struggling to find their footing.

Coach Yahya Manneh knew changes were needed, and at half-time, he made bold substitutions, introducing star players Alhagie Baba Leigh, Bisenty Mendy, and Ahmed Njundu Kanyi. This injection of talent and energy revitalised the Gambian side, pushing Senegal to fortify their defence to cling to their slim lead.

While the opening half was a disappointment for the Baby Scorpions, the second half brought fresh hope. They began to create several promising chances as they pressed for an equaliser. Despite the talent at Coach Manneh’s disposal, the absence of key player and captain Abdou Sarr, who was mysteriously missing from the matchday squad, loomed large in the team’s strategy.

In a poignant moment, Alieu Drammeh, who made his debut start after being promoted from FC Barcelona’s youth academy, took on the responsibility of captain. Unfortunately, he was forced to exit the match in the second half due to discomfort, leaving him visibly emotional on the bench.

Looking ahead, the Gambia is preparing for a crucial showdown against Somalia in their next Group C match on April 4, followed by a decisive clash with Tunisia on April 7 in Casablanca.
