A Gambian migrant has died after their boat bound for Europe stuck in Mauritania for days, leaving dozens more migrants including six women in dire conditions.

Ebrima Drammeh, Italy-based Gambian migrant rights activist, told Gambiana the boat left Kartong in Gambia on 1 November.

“But the boat had a problem in Nouagdjibou Mauritania about 1123 kilometers from Kartong,” he said, adding that “there were 50 people in the boat including six women, one man has died and another person is very sick at the moment.”

“I have spoken with the Gambian president in Nouagdjibou and they are making arrangements to take him to the hospital, the other 48 people are all doing well.”

This comes barely a week since 21 Gambian migrants died of acute hunger in a boat bound for Spain.
