The Gambia’s star athlete Gina Bass has been given a hero’s welcome after a stellar performance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Bass, one of Africa’s fastest female runners, reached the women’s 100m semi-finals with a national record of 11.16 seconds.
The 26-year-old star athlete won the hearts of Gambians of all walks of life with her success at the global sports event.
Many have called on the government to grant her a national recognition award as well as provide a support package including scholarship to further her education, a decent home and a car.
Bass, who has a full time job as police sub inspector, was today awarded a plot of land by the Inspector General of Police.
“A piece of land has been purchased for Gina to be built to completion and handed over to her in honour of her accomplishment,” police said in a statement.
