Gamtel has launched an investigation after a suspected act of sabotage caused a major disruption to internet services across parts of The Gambia.

The state-owned telecommunications provider reported that its primary fibre-optic cable, which links to the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) submarine cable system, was severely damaged in the Bijilo area.

Preliminary findings suggest that a sealed manhole was deliberately opened and a used motor tyre set on fire inside, causing extensive damage to critical infrastructure.

The incident has affected both residential and business customers, with connectivity remaining down in several areas.

Gamtel’s project team was unable to restore services on the day of the incident but has since been deployed to carry out urgent repair work.

“This is an unlawful act of vandalism against national infrastructure,” the company said in a statement, adding that those responsible would face the full force of the law.

The company has condemned the attack and appealed for public patience as work continues to restore full service.

Investigations are ongoing, and no arrests have yet been announced.
