General Alagie Martin, who has been placed on indefinate leave after he was accused of gross human rights violation before the TRRC, has finally apologised to Colonel Babucarr Sanyang, one of his alleged victims.
Colonel Sanyang made some damning allegation against General Martin during his testimony to the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) in 2019. He told the TRRC that Martin placed a plastic bag over his head and tried to suffocate him during a torture session.
On Wednesday, the two army officers reconciled at the TRRC during a face-to-face meeting.
“I’m here to ask forgiveness. It was not my intention to do what has happened. It was the situation at the time. As you know me colonel, I would definitely not come and do those things to you without being given instructions at the time,” General Martin said.
“After all what has happened, you were working under me as my 2IC [second in command], we worked amicable in the office. But with all those things you managed to cope with me.
“Once again I would like to say I’m very very sorry for what has happened. Definitely it’s regrettable.”
