The embattled chief executive officer of Kanifing Municipal Council Sainabou Martin-Sonko told reporters today (22 Feb.) that the infighting in the council is yet to be resolved a day after she returned to work following a lengthy suspension.

Ms Martin-Sonko was instructed to return to work yesterday by the ministry of local government amid ongoing allegations against her of financial impropriety which led to her suspension by the council.

She returned to an empty office space in her first day at work after months of suspension.

“The council decided that the matter will be looked at probably tomorrow, and any decision they have reached at will be communicated to us,” Mrs Sonko told reporters.

“We’ve been coming here I think for more than  seven or eight times if I can recall, and we’ve been giving the same excuse. So, I think this matter is not over yet,” she added.

However, mayor Ahmed Talib Bensouda, who ordered the suspension, called for calm but described Ms Martin-Sonko’s return to work as “political interference”.

Bensouda has a strained relationship with the minister of local government and lands.
