Jonathan McKinstry, head coach of the senior football team, has called for patience from Gambians following the team’s elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Despite the setback, McKinstry remains optimistic about the future and has assured fans of a decisive comeback.
“The moment is difficult. But the future is bright,” McKinstry said in a statement. “While our AFCON qualifying campaign didn’t end as planned, we’ve made important progress toward the vision of football we want for The Gambia. We move forward, always striving.”
Fondly referred to as “Johny” by Gambians, McKinstry took over from Tom Saintfiet, who stepped down after leading the Scorpions to the 2024 AFCON. Saintfiet’s tenure was historic, as he secured the team’s first-ever qualification for the continental championship and repeated the feat in subsequent years.
McKinstry’s arrival marked a new chapter for Gambian football, with aspirations of building on the foundation laid by his predecessor.
While the exit from the tournament has disappointed many, the coach emphasised the importance of patience as the team works to refine its strategy and performance.
