Gambian lawyer Lamin J. Darboe has officially entered the race to become the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) flagbearer, joining a tight contest with Kanifing Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda and veteran politician ANM Ousainu Darboe ahead of the party’s September 2 deadline.
Mr Darboe now becomes the latest aspirant to submit his application, signaling an intensifying competition to lead the country’s largest opposition party into the next presidential election.
This is not his first attempt at UDP leadership. Darboe previously submitted an application during the party’s 2021 selection process but later expressed dissatisfaction, claiming he was denied an interview despite meeting all requirements.
With the application window now closed, the UDP is expected to begin vetting and internal processes that will determine the party’s next standard-bearer.
Party officials say the outcome could influence its strategy and positioning ahead of upcoming national elections.
Political analysts describe the contest as a pivotal moment for the UDP, which has been preparing for a strong showing in future polls.
The party’s leadership race is also being closely watched by supporters and rival political groups, who see it as a test of unity and organisational strength.
