The lead counsel of the Truth Reconciliation and Reparations Commission has warned the public to desist from ‘any form of attack on Yankuba Touray.’
Counsel Essa Mbye Faal gave the warning at a press conference that came shortly after Mr Touray’s refusal to testify the TRRC.
“We have said that it is wrong for one to attack Mr Yankuba Touray or any member of his family — so we encourage people to desist from such behavior. We hope that the advice will be heeded. It will be a criminal offense to attack Mr Yankuba Touray so be warned,” he said.
Counsel Essa Mbye Faal added: ” for Mr Touray he is in liberty, so it may have certain consequence like we said earlier, we think his behavior was contemptuous to the proceeding of the Commission and that is an offence under the laws of the Gambia.”
But he said despite Mr Touray’s refusal to testify that he (Touray) had appeared for the subpoena but refused to appear for the testimony.
Yankuba Touray, a former AFPRC Junta member and minister during the Jammeh regime, refused to give testimony due to the ‘Constitutional Immunity” he claimed to have been granted to him.
Mr Touray had faced accusations of gross human rights violations during the AFPRC Junta rule.
