The Banjul Magistrates’ Court has convicted Momodou Lamin Baldeh in connection with the theft of more than D12.5 million, following criminal proceedings that began in August 2024.

Baldeh was charged with one count of stealing, contrary to Section 252 of the Criminal Code. He initially pleaded not guilty when he first appeared before the court on 20 August 2024.

At the conclusion of the trial, the court found him guilty and ordered him to pay a fine of D100,000 or serve one year in prison.

The court also ordered him to repay D12,575,000, failing which he would serve an additional four years’ imprisonment.

After failing to comply with the court’s orders, Baldeh was committed to Mile II Central Prison to serve the custodial sentence.

The Gambia Police Force said the conviction reflects its commitment to professionally investigating criminal offences and ensuring offenders are held accountable through due process and the rule of law.
