A young Gambian man is appealing for financial help after spending money intended for his family’s Eid ram on betting.

The man, who asked not to be named, says he used D25,000 sent by his brother abroad to fund a gambling habit.

The money was meant to be handed to their father to buy a ram for the Eid al-Adha celebration, which is marked by the sacrifice of an animal in Muslim households.

“My brother sent me 25,000 dalasis to give to my father to buy a ram. But I am addicted to betting, and I ended up using the money,” he told Gambiana.

The man said he began using small amounts but quickly lost control.

“I can’t sleep. If my brother finds out, it could damage our relationship,” he added.

He is now seeking assistance to repay the money before his brother discovers the truth.

Gambling has become increasingly popular among young people in The Gambia, despite concerns over addiction and financial loss.
