Dr. Demba Sabally, the Minister of Agriculture, has come under public backlash after threatening that the government would arrest lawyer Essa Faal and Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe if they again show solidarity with protesters.
His remarks came a day after protests erupted in the capital, Banjul, over a lack of transparency in the sale of assets linked to former President Yahya Jammeh. At least 27 young people were arrested during the demonstration, which was later deemed an unauthorised assembly.
The detainees were held for 72 hours before being released, following public pressure and widespread condemnation. The government subsequently released the names of buyers involved in the asset sales.
Dr Sabally accused Ms Lowe and Mr Faal of inciting unrest by attending the protests.
Speaking at a rally, Dr. Sabally condemned Essa Faal and Rohey Malick Lowe for showing support to the detained youths and demonstrators.

He vowed that the government would arrest them and others like them if similar actions occur in the future.
“We have seen politicians who attended the protest, people like Rohey Malick Lowe, who went there to incite the youth. But if she repeats such actions next time, she will be handcuffed and detained.
“Even if you’re a mayor, if you break the law, you will be dealt with. We also saw a politician like Essa Faal following these young people at the police stations and at Westfield. But next time, if Essa Faal goes to such a gathering, he will be handcuffed and placed in a cell. No one will be allowed to destabilize this government,” he said.
However, many Gambians have reacted to his threats with condemnation, urging President Barrow to take decisive action against Dr. Sabally.
Amadou Jallow claimed that such a threat might have been discussed at the cabinet level, casting doubt that Dr. Sabally would make such serious threats independently.
“Whatever Demba Sabally said here is likely what they discuss as a government. Having a private conversation with this government is to your own detriment,” he said.
Baboucarr Mambureh described Dr. Sabally as a laughingstock, saying he and his allies were in hiding during the three-day protest.
“This guy is just funny. During the protests, no one saw you, but now you’re making noise,” he said.
Mamat Cham added: “Demba Sabally is a national security threat. Arresting any political opponent or activist will end this government before 2026.”
