The National Assembly has passed 53 bills including the long delayed Pension Bill and the Access to Information Bill respectively. 

On Monday, lawmakers bid farewell to the assembly in Banjul after the end of their fiver year term (2017 to 2022).  

Gambians will vote in April to elect new parliamentarians to guide the affairs of the state for the next five years.

The outgoing Speaker of the National Assembly Mariam Jack Denton in her final speech outlined the bills that were enacted during the five year period.

According to her, the legislature also witnessed the tabling of three Member’s Bills, and enacted two of them whilst the other one tabled failed to pass through the second reading stage. 

“This is unprecedented in the history of the National Assembly as only one Member’s Bill was ever introduced and passed in the National Assembly,” she added.

Some of the landmark bills that were passed in the assembly include National Human Rights Commission Act, 2017; Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission Act, 2017; Constitutional Review Commission Act, 2017; Forest Act, 2018; Maritime Zones Act, 2019;

Women Enterprises Fund Act, 2020; Petroleum Commission Act, 2021; Persons with Disabilities Act, 2021; National Assembly Service Act, 2021; National Health Insurance Act, 2021; and most recently, The Public Service Pensions Act, 2022.
