Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh, leader of National Unity Partner, has promised to solve The Gambia’s high unemployment by building more skill centres for youths.

Speaking at a rally in Ngain Sanjal, Jammeh said: “I will open technical schools to teach students with skills so that in case the government cannot employ them, they will employ themselves.”

The country’s youth unemployment rate stands at 45.6 %.

Mr Jammeh said: “We are going to change the learning system in the country because the education system is not moving forward. [The] government should support youth to be able to have skills that will enable them to have contracts, benefit themselves and their country.

“That is why I said, our education here should be changed and that is, we have to turn to technical education because if you look around those that have money abroad and want them to come to the country and invest like establishing factories and working places, what they need is people that have skills.”
