Police in Brikama have arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged damage and theft of National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) electric cables at the Nyambai Forest borehole site, an incident that threatened the supply of essential public services.
The case was reported on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, by a NAWEC official after disruptions were detected at the facility.
Preliminary checks revealed that power cables supplying the borehole had been tampered with and removed, prompting a formal complaint to the police.
As part of the investigation, detectives reviewed CCTV footage from the site, which led to the identification and arrest of Muhammad Kuyateh, a resident of Busumbala, who is alleged to be linked to the incident.

Police said investigations further revealed that the suspect is currently facing court proceedings for similar allegations involving the destruction of NAWEC boreholes in Jamisa, for which he was granted bail.
Investigators allege that while on bail, he targeted another borehole in the Brikama area using a similar method.
The suspect has since been cautioned, charged, and detained as investigations continue.
The Gambia Police Force has strongly warned against vandalism and theft of public infrastructure, stressing that such acts disrupt essential services and harm communities.
