A Gambian police officer has been arrested and detained for allegedly stripping a couple naked at a beach and attempting to blackmail them for money.
The incident, reported to the Tactical Support Unit (TSU) Charge Office, alleges that the officer manhandled a man and woman at the beach under the guise of enforcing “public decency”. If proven, this act represents a severe abuse of power and a violation of the ethical standards expected of law enforcement personnel.
In a statement, the Gambia Police Force (GPF) condemned the officer’s alleged misconduct, emphasising its commitment to professionalism and accountability.
“A thorough and impartial investigation is underway, and the GPF assures the public that justice will be served. If the allegations are substantiated, the officer will face the full force of the law and stringent disciplinary measures,” the statement read.
The GPF reiterated its commitment to upholding public trust and maintaining the highest ethical standards within its ranks. It encouraged members of the public to report any instances of misconduct to help ensure accountability and integrity in policing.
The case has drawn significant public attention, with many calling for swift action to address abuse of power within the police force.
