
President Adama Barrow received Dr. Sennen Hounton, UNFPA Regional Director for West Africa, at the State House today for a courtesy call as part of the Director’s tour of The Gambia.
The visit aims to review UNFPA programmes and explore avenues to support the country’s national development plans.
Discussions centred on maternal mortality, gender issues, and women and youth empowerment.

President Barrow emphasized the government’s commitment to improving healthcare despite limited resources, highlighting initiatives to enhance health facility accessibility and service delivery.
He urged member countries to contribute to bridging gaps to meet development targets.
Dr. Hounton commended the government’s investments in rural healthcare and the refurbishment of maternity wards led by the First Lady.
She praised The Gambia’s progress on women’s, children’s, and youth rights, and proposed collaborative efforts to reduce maternal mortality and strengthen youth skills.
