A well loved Banjul Islamic leader Alhaji Alieu Mboge has died of a sudden illness, suspected by many to be Covid-19.

The former Secretary to the Banjul Muslim Elders Committee died today at the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital. He was said to be in his 80s, a vulnerable category for Covid-19.

The mayor of Banjul Rohey Lowe has confirmed the death in an emotional video shared on her Facebook page.

“I have lost a very good friend and a father figure,” she said.

The mayor has pleaded with the Health Secretary Dr Samateh to put the capital and the Greater Banjul Area on lockdown as coronavirus related cases and deaths rise in the last two weeks.
