The Mayor of Kanifing Municipality, Talib Bensouda, has vowed to end President Adama Barrow’s rule in the 2026 election, if the United Democratic Party (UDP) makes him their flagbearer.

Bensouda, who submitted his application for the UDP flagbearer position, defended his candidacy following criticism from opponents who questioned his readiness for national leadership.

Speaking to reporters after appearing before the party’s election committee, he said: “I’m his son and I go by his party policies. And I am hopeful that if I am selected, I will defeat Adama Barrow.”

He was greeted with chants of “people’s choice” as he arrived for the vetting, with dozens of supporters turning out to back him.

His growing popularity within the party has been noted by political analysts, who describe him as one of the strongest contenders in the race.

However, Bensouda faces a stiff challenge. He is among 11 applicants vying for the UDP leadership, including long-time party leader and seasoned lawyer Ousainou Darboe.
